The Current Scene

Aberdeen has shown itself to be highly resilient throughout the early days of the current economic climate, continuing to attract significant investments and new business ventures. However, it would be wrong to think that we are immune to market forces, most sectors are now experiencing pain. Aberdeen must ensure that it continues to be competitive, to justify the current and previous investments, and ensure no loss of business, or businesses, to neighbouring cities and towns.

It is acknowledged that Aberdeen currently does many of the things that other BIDS aim to introduce, "Safer City" radio links, door steward certification, "Best Bar None" awards, nighttime taxi ranks and transport marshals, as well as graffiti and flyposter controls. These have to be considered and account taken of the cost of these to members. However, this does put Aberdeen at an advantage, able to start at the higher level, and thereby ensure early success.

We need to ensure that money is spent on marketing and services which generate a positive return for all businesses. In order to do this, a Business Improvement District (BID), for the core of the city centre, has been proposed by the Aberdeen City Centre Association (ACCA), the membership of which is drawn from all the business sectors in the city centre. The proposal has the backing and support of Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeen City and Shire Economic Futures, Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, and Grampian Police.

A BID would ensure that businesses decide on strategies and projects they feel will improve business in a fair and equitable way. BIDs have enjoyed great success in the UK and we believe that a BID in Aberdeen will boost both your business and give the city centre a more competitive edge.
